How to make baby food: Pears

This is how to make homemade pear puree for your fat baby.

IMG_0446

    1. Start with fresh pears

  2. Remove skins and seeds. Dice them up.

3. Boil them up with enough water just covering them until tender - about 8 min.

4. Into the magic bullet. Puree until smooth.

5. Yum.

6. Into covered ice cube trays, freeze. Thaw and serve.

This batch made about 16 "ice cube servings" - approx 1 oz. each. The organic pears were $1.48/lb. - the 4 I purchased totaled $2.22. This is $0.14/serving(ounce). The small jar of organic pears from Earth's Best were $0.89, for 2.5oz or $0.36/ounce. Good savings if you ask me. It would have cost me $5.76 for the same from Earth's best, plus I am in control of what is in the food. And I like control.

O Christmas Tree

Gabe is really wrapped up in the excitement of Christmas. He loves to listen to carols on the radio non-stop. And every time Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer comes on - he says, "Listen, Mom, just like the movie!" He points out decorations and is so excited for dusk as that is when the Christmas lights turn on at our house - and in the neighborhood. He says he WANTS everything. But, we remind him that Santa has to visit all the little girls and boys houses on Christmas and he doesn't have room in his bag for more than 1 toy for each child. So Gabe has to tell him what he wants the most - it always goes back to "THE DRILL!" Maybe Christmas magic will come and bring him this most-wanted toy.

My Mom with my Dad in tow, always made Christmas what it was meant to be - Magic. One year  - probably through the spirit of Christmas - Santa's boot prints were left on our carpeting. When you are 10 years old and all your friends are telling you that Santa isn't real - then there are boot prints on your stairs, that is PROOF that he is real. I remember almost everything about our Christmas' at home - not the exact gifts - but the exact feelings. Excitement, joy, anticipation, restlessness, happy, warm, delicious, and LOVE. Thanks Mom and Dad - but let's face it - Mom's are the Christmas elves. And Dad's are the warm laps on Christmas eve. Mom's are the ones busy at Christmas - shopping, planning, baking, wrapping, caroling, church-going, Christmasing. Is that a word? It is now. Christmasing.

Remembering that - I have that Christmas candle passed to me now. I am the Mom, the matriarch, the stocking hanger, the tradition holder. That is a lot of power. Everything your child remembers is from your work and careful thoughts and planning during Christmas. I have some large shoes to fill in making Christmas magical for my boys. I hope I can rise to the occasion.

Noah's favorite new spot. He can stand here just staring for 10-15 minutes. We are considering keeping the tree up year-round just to keep him content! Ha!

This is Gabriel on his First Christmas....

Noah eats bananas!

Noah has finally given in and consumed some baby food. Or maybe we have finally appealed to his taste buds and found something he likes. It is funny that he likes bananas. When I was pregnant with him it was one of the foods that gave me the worst heartburn ever! I couldn't eat them at all past 12 weeks pregnant with him. I am glad that we finally found something he likes. I tried to mix the bananas with a little oatmeal today (since the oatmeal is vitamin and iron fortified) and he wouldn't open his mouth. Once I blended up some new bananas (in our new Magic Bullet that I just love and hope to make all of our baby food homemade in it) he opened up his mouth wide then!

Yummy yums!

He even opens his mouth for them instead of clamping it shut like with other foods: rice cereal, oatmeal, and sweet potatoes.

Smiles instead of frowns! Yay!

Weekend Update

We made crayons - take paper off old crayons, into silicone baking cups, bake at 400* until melted (8 mins) then cool. Color away.

Noah stands in his crib - we lowered it more...

Noah doesn't enjoy oatmeal cereal either...

Not even from Daddy.

Noah - cereal

Noah tries rice cereal for the first time.

Noah tires rice cereal for the second time.

Rice cereal = FAIL

Happy 6 month birthday Noah. For your half year birthday we got you rice cereal. He is not impressed. Gagging, puking, crying, all with the first taste. FAIL. Just to note - the first 3 pictures are all within 5 minutes of each other - we had to change the bibs 4 different times as he puked in all of them each time the cereal just touched his lips.
Today was a bit better. He didn't puke or gag today when it touched his lips, yet he did not swallow it either.

Noah likes the box better than its contents

This last picture is try #2, Thursday AM. Not quite as repulsed today.

Good, clean, cheap fun.

Isn't it amazing how much fun can be had with 2 children and a laundry basket?
Noah enjoyed this more than Gabriel did. It is magic to hear both boys giggling together, encouraging each other with laughs meaning, "more, more."

Rub a Dub Dub, 2 boys in the tub

Since Noah has been sitting so well lately and bathing him in the infant tub has gotten to be a challenge since he wants to go-go-go we tried them both in the big tubby.
It worked. Both boys loved it and enjoyed each other tremendously. A house empty, except for 4 people in a 5 x 10 room all giggling - BLISS!

Cornucopia

I made this cornocopia and fruits and veggies to get Gabe excited for Thanksgiving next week. He loves that word. Cornocopia.

Gabe's a chef and Noah's a sicky.

We had a fun day here yesterday. Daddy had conferences last night so it was just me and the boys for 12+ hours - kinda like Daddy every weekend :)

Gabe got to make "caterpiller pizza" for supper and loved decorating them. (English muffin pizzas in the shape of a caterpiller).

Noah's eye looked a TINY bit swollen in the morning but it was TERRIBLE pink eye by the afternoon. We have some antibiotic drops now so hopefully when he gets up from his THROUGH the night sleeping (finally!!!) it will be a bit better.

The worst part was keeping the 2 boys apart. They love to play almost right on top of each other, but with pink eye being SO contagious this was not a good idea. None-the-less Gabe got to watch lots of movies while Noah crawled around and touched everything. Gabe watched 2 VHS tapes - The Grinch and Ruldolph.

Despite the eye - fun was had by all! Happy Wednesday!

The little chef places mushrooms and pepper on his caterpiller head to make a face - he ate ALL of this.

More cooking :)

The eye. ugh.

The eye again - double ugh.

Noah's baptism.

Noah was baptized at our church on Sunday, surrounded by our family. We chose both Lindzy and Jason & Kristen and John to be his Godparents because 2 sets are always better than 1. It was a great day and we are so happy everyone could join us for it. We enjoyed a chili lunch at our home after the service and we were so glad to be with everyone. Welcome to God's family, Noah. We love you and promise to teach you about God - who loves you more than all of us combined. Hard to imagine that since we love you so much.
